Somewhere in the Hill Country of Austin, the SOFT SURF group Comforter plays the track ‘Nightline' for your listening and viewing pleasure. This was a technically complicated project that I produced, directed, filmed, edited, and color graded. We shot four “live performance” songs which were each performed three times to offer the most angles and possibilities in post. With three cameras rolling and three performances per song, I ended up with a multi-cam edit with nine angles for each song. To make things a little bit more complicated, this was going to be a “live” performance so syncing audio was not as simple as dropping in the produced track and doing an automatic sync. Out of the three takes, one audio recording was chosen to be the master track. Then manual slipping and sliding was required to align the other two takes because each performance was not the exact same duration (i.e. one performance might have a slightly longer guitar solo, a slightly shorter intro, etc). If I were to do this type of trick again, I would record the band doing the performance once and then play that track to them through monitors for the additional takes to help maintain consistency. All in all, I am happy with the end product and I’m lucky I caught these guys right before they began to get some well deserved recognition for their work. Check out this recent write-up.
